The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake The level of salt in the lake s water what scientists call its salinity has been increasing steadily for years because the lake s water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfal

The reading and listening material have conflict opinions about the solutions of the increasing salinity problem in the Salton Sea in California. The reading part proposed three solutions, which is contradicted by the lecturer, which is presented as follows.

Firstly, the passage introduce an option, that is direct removing salt from the lake through special desalination facilities like pumping. However, the speaker opposes the claim by presenting some serious problems as a result of this desalination process. During the pumping period, some leftover of the water evaporation, such as solid matters and other chemical issues, might be extremely toxic to human's life. And these materials will eventually be taken into individuals' body due to the circulating process.

Secondly, the writer states that the salinity problem can be solved by diluting the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean. By contrast, in accordance with the speaker, the claim of the reading is not realistic and practical. Because the dilution solution has to be realized through pipelines or canals, which is too expensive to conduct for the government. The distance between the Salton Sea and the Pacific Ocean is nearly 100 kilometers away, which means the construction used to construct the channel between them is recourse-costing and will bring a huge burden for the government.

Thirdly, the passage argues that it is another good option to control the lake's salinity by constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections and the salinity would be reduced in the main and largest section. But the lecture views this issue from an opposite angle. The lecturer points out the vulnerability of the walls. Because any erupted events like earthquakes would destroy the built walls. So it is not a long-term solution in terms of the uncertainty things happened on earth so frequently.
