In general, the percentage of women aged under 30 having their first child decreased, while the proportion of women aged over 30 having their first baby increased. In addition, the percentage of women falling into 30- 34 age group giving birth to their first child was highest.
Looking at the chart for more detail, in 1966, the proportion of women who were aged 19-24 having their first child accounted for 62% of the total number of women, compared to 36% those aged 25-30. Over the next 40 years, there was a significant dropped to 28% of women aged 19-24 giving birth to their first child, while those aged 25-30 rose dramatically to 50% before falling to 38% in 2006. Likewise , the percentage of women aged under 19 who gave birth to their first baby decreased considerably from 34% to 12% during the period shown.
Regarding the other informarion, in 1966, the percentage of women aged 30- 34 giving birth to their first baby accounted for 12%, compared to 3% of those aged over 40. During the next 40 years, the 30-34 age group saw a dramatic increase to 45%, which is the highest point in 2006, while those aged over 40 climbed slightly to 5% after decreasing to nearly 2% in 2006. In addtion, the percentage of women aged 34-39 who have their first child increased significantly from 9% to 30%.
