The line graph presents data on the consumption of pork and chicken in the US over a period of 44 years from 1960 to 2003. Overall, chicken was the more popular meat during the period, although pork was the preferred choice for the first two decades.
In 1960, pork consumption stood at around 50 pounds per capita, while chicken consumption was just below 30 pounds. Over the next 15 years, there was a steady increase in pork consumption to reach a peak of almost 60 pounds per person in 1975. However, this was followed by a sharp drop to around 43 pounds in 1980. In contrast, chicken consumption saw a gradual increase during this period, reaching over 52 pounds per person in 1985.
From 1985 onwards, chicken became the most commonly consumed meat in the US, with consumption increasing steadily to almost 80 pounds per person in 2003. Pork consumption also increased during this period, but at a much slower rate, reaching around 60 pounds per person in the same year. The biggest difference in consumption between the two meats was in 2003, when almost 80 pounds of chicken was consumed per person compared to just over 50 pounds of pork.
In conclusion, the line graph clearly shows that chicken has been the more popular meat in the US since the mid-1980s, with consumption continuing to rise into the 21st century. Although pork consumption has also increased, it has not kept pace with chicken, resulting in a significant gap between the two meats in terms of consumption in recent years.
