Use of hydrogen based engine in replace of internal combustion engine to power automobiles as hydrogen engine is more available, environment friendly and more efficient.
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss about the hydrogen fuel cell based engine as a replacement of existing internal combustion engine. The passage asserts that hydrogen based cell can be a effective replacement as they can't be easily depleted, more environment friendly and more efficient. But the professor in the lecture casts doubt on these points for the following three reasons.
First of all, the passage says that internal combustion engine is operated through petroleum and the amount of petroleum is decreasing day by day. One day existing petroleum will run out completely. In this case hydrogen based engine can be a viable replacement to power automobiles. The passage thinks that hydrogen can't be depleted quicky. But the lecture refutes the opinion of the reading passage as the professor asserts that usable hydrogen for powering automobiles can't get easily as pure hydrogen isn't available in our earth. It's needed to extract the pure hydrogen from some gaseous form and then to transform them into the liquid state. Liquid form is indispensable for using hydrogen in powering of cars. But advanced and difficult technologies are needed to accomplish this task and it's very much excruciating to get the pure hydrogen.
Second of all, the passage says that internal combustion engine is not environment friendly. It produces carbon di oxide as bi-product. This carbon di oxide is really harmful for the environment. But hydrogen based engine can also produce water as bi-product. But the professor refutes this statement as she thinks that to get the pure hydrogen it's quite unavoidable to burn some environmentally harmful element like coal, burning oil. These deteriorates the environment more drastically rather offers any solution.
Finally, the passage thinks that hydrogen based engine is more efficient and economically better option than combustion engine. The hydrogen based cars can travel twice as distance more than combustion engine based cars using same fuel. But the lecture casts doubt on this point as it thinks that platinum is needed in the engine to operate the engine to produce power through hydrogen and this platinum is very very expensive. Thus it's quite not viable solution at all to use hydrogen engine.
