Essay topics:

The chart below gives information about how families in one country spent their weekly income in 1968 and in 2018.

The bar chart compares the distribution of family earnings in one week between 1968 and 2018. From an overall perspective, the percentage of food expenditures compared to the total sum dropped significantly, whereas leisure expenses increased by the greatest margin.

Looking at the figures in 1968, spendings on food evidently take up the largest proportion of overall payments, standing at 35%. Money spent on fuel and power was the lowest in that year with only 6%. Expenditures on household goods, personal goods and transport were level at 8%. Finally, 10% and 9% of income in a week were distributed to housing and leisure respectively.

Turning to the figures in 2018, leisure spendings increased the most by 17%. Money allocated to residential aspects also experienced a significant increase, from 10% to 18%. Conversely, food spendings plunged to 17% from 35%, which was only half the amount as it was in 1968. The sum spent on transportation increased by 6% to 14%. The remaining four areas of expenditures did not experience such obvious changes, with the difference between the two yeas no more than 5%. Noticeably, the percentage on money on household goods purchased remained the same at 6%.
