nitrogen is very important for the life on earth. Over 90% of the earth's supply exists as a gas in the atmosphere. The diagram below describes the nitrogen cycle.
The picture illustrates the cycle of nitrogen, a crucial element to the earth.
Overall, there are two main stages of the cycle, where nitrogen exists in two types of condition: gaseous nitrogen and nitrate. The beginning step is to fixate gas while the last step is the denitrification process back into gas.
More than 90% of the earth’s atmosphere exists in the form of gas. To begin with, the lightning contributes gaseous nitrogen to the soil, which is later absorbed by the plants. Then, the nitrogen is transformed into grass, after the animals eat it, it becomes protein to supply the animals’ needs. When the animals die, the protein from dead bodies decompose into ammonium, then lastly into nitrate.
Gaseous nitrogen is also fixated by plants before turning into ammonium, then nitrite and lastly nitrate. The nitrate, in the last step, undergoes a denitrification process before being returned to the earth’s atmosphere.
