The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line chart provided illustrates the volumes of cargo transported in the UK via four distinct modes of transport over the period from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, the number of goods shipped by road, water and pipeline all increased except for railways, which remained relatively stable. Notably, roads emerged as the most popular form of transportation, whereas pipelines were the least.
Starting with roads and pipelines, the number of merchandise shipped by roads stabilized at approximately 78 million tonnes between 1990 and 1994, before soaring and peaking at 97 million tonnes in 2002. Meanwhile, there was a moderate increase in the quantity of cargo delivered via pipelines to around 25 million tonnes during the first period from 1974 to 1990, followed by a slight decline and then stability at 20 million tonnes at the end of the period.
Goods transported by waterway and rail each started at approximately 40 million tons in 1974. By 1982, freight transshipment by waterway had considerably picked up at nearly 60 million tons and then flattened out for the next 10 years. After that, there was a slight decline in the volume of goods shipped by water to nearly 50 million tons, before climbing to just over 62 million tons in 2002. By contrast, rail freight remained at the same level, despite fluctuations between 1978 and 1994.
