In this set of materials, the reading passage states that ethanol fuel is not a good alternative to gasoline in United States and provides some reasons. However, the lecturer finds all the idea skeptical and shows some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that ethanol fuel would produce carbon dioxide as much as gasoline so their effects like global warming are the same. In contrast, the lecturer argues that it is correct that ethanol release carbon dioxide but it is originated from corn plant which can remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Since the plants need CO2 as part of nutrition to grow, they can reduce its level significantly. So, the final result of this equation is decrease of CO2 in air.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading passage that if we produce ethanol from available plants, we would lose a good source of food for farm animals. On the contrary, the lecturer contends that it is possible to use Cellulose to produce ethanol. Animals do not eat Cellulose in their food and if we use this part of plants, we would not reduce animal foods’ supply. Hence, ethanol does not affect animal feeding.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that the price of gasoline and ethanol are the same while United States government considers tax subsidies for ethanol producers. Conversely, the lecturer claims that if people buy more ethanol, its production will increase and the price will decrease. For example, if companies produce it three times greater, the cost would drop 40%. In fact, after selling more ethanol, it can compete with gasoline on price dramatically.
