The reading provides three reasons to cast doubt on the story wich claims that Greek people utilized huge mirror to set the Roman`s ships on fire. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents several reasons to refute them all.
First, the author argues that this idea was technologically imposiple for that time and Greek people were not able to such a complex and huge mirror. Conversely, the lecturer cast doubt on this idea by stating that they did not need to bild the huge mirror and they might use the dozen nomber af small mirror to do this job. Greek mathematician were able parabolic creavature of these small copper made mirror and put them in the on assemble to damage to Roman`s ships.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that this mirror was not a practical weapon because it take more than 10 minuet to start the fire in ships by using this method. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that although it would take than 10 minuet to set the woods of these ships on fire, the Roman`s ships were also contained other substances which the fire could spread quickly on them. For instanse, the sticky materials which used for seal the ships could burn in the less than a secound and eventually careat fire in these ships.
Finally, the reading asserts that this weapon do not show the logical improvment from the Greek`s method and in this situations they would probably used flaming arrows. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that Roman`s soldiors were familiar with the flaming arrows and so, Greek people could not use this approach for fighting against them. However, using the mirror, provided an opportunity for Greek people to supprize Roman`s soldiors and set thei ships on the fire. As a result, it was a more effective method for them.
