The reading passage contends that there are several points why some archeologists believe that a European silver coin is not original historical evidences. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this agreement.
To begin with, the lecturer questions the validity of the reading passage that Maine where the coin was discovered in the Native American site is located in the distance from where a Norse presence in North America was documented. This is attributed to the fact that there are another object including the coin had brought from far distance. It presents that the Native American had traveled far distance. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer cast doubt on the reading passage that there was no other coins have been discovered at the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the Norse. This is because at the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the Norse had created valuable objects using permanent sediment. Further, the Natives brought back with valuable coins and other objects when they are returning from there. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that the Norse who traveled across the Atlantic Ocean would have understood that the coins would be likely to them being useless. It is obvious that the Natives have already known that the coins are valuable and appeals them to bring them into their place because it also looks beautiful to them, such as necklaces and Jewels. As a result, the reading passage’s last point is refuted.
