The passage tells that the reducing population of the Sea otters in Alaskan coast is because of the increased environmental pollution. However, the speaker is not in favor of this notion, he believes that the Orcus whale is solely responsible for it and presents the following evidences to prove his point.
First, the speaker refutes the point mentioned in the reading that the Sea otters are declining in number due to environmental pollution such as oil rigs and harmful chemicals from the industries. He says that if the Sea otters were dying due to pollution then there should be the relics of then on the sea shore. On the other hand, absence of dead bodies is a sign that some predator is hunting and eating them immediately.
Second, The author states that the pollution affects the entire ecosystem, thus explain the reduction in the population of seals and sea lions as well. Conversely, the lecturer points out that though the Orca whales usually feed on other whales but as the population of these whales have decreased due to human hunting. This led the Orca whale to change its eating habits; this resulted in hunting of other sea mammals such as seals, sea otters and sea lions etc.
Last but not the least; the passage says that the uneven pattern caused by ocean currents or other environmental factors suggest the uneven pattern of decline in the population of sea otter. The professor rebuts this idea and contraindicates it by explaining further. He narrates that the Orca whales cannot survive or hunt in shallow water. Therefore, the places where water is shallow the population of sea otter is not reducing as compared to the other areas where Orca whales are capable of killing them. Thus, the lecture has opposed all three theories.
