Essay topics: TPO-44 - Integrated Writing Task
An ancient silver coin which was found in the state of Maine in the USA is discussed in both the reading passage and the audio. The author gives some evidence in order to support the stance that this coin is a fake; however, the lecturer provides us with some novel evidence which buttresses the idea that a contact between Native Americans and Europeans took place a thousand years ago before the continent was rediscovered by Columbus. The evidence will be discussed in details below.
Firstly, the author avers that there is a great distance between the archaeological site and settlements of Norses in Canada thus there is no way the contact might take place. The speaker debunks the prospect due to the possibility that the group of Native Americans who lived in Maine's site might travel great distances in order to collect interesting items from overseas. In fact, at the site some other objects which were originated from Europe have been found.
Secondly, the text states that only one coin was found therefore this is a fake. At the same time, the speaker gives us a reasonable explanation of the fact discussed. He avers that Europeans did not build regular settlements they lived for a while in Canada and then returned to Europe; the coins which they probably brought to the new continent were taken back to Europe because they had a great value for the Norse people.
Finally, the writer claims that silver coins were not perceived by Native Americans as money; consequently, it was useless to bring them to the Canada settlements. The speaker disagrees with this stance. Although coins indeed were not recognized by local dwellers as money they may be used as a mean for bargaining. The Native Americans liked beautiful and interesting items and if they considered the coins as attractive, the coins may be successfully employed to trade with the native people.
