The article states that storing patient's medical records in electronic databases would have several advantages over paper-based record keeping, and provides three reasons of support. However, the speaker explained that those advantages are not powerful and useful as they look like. She refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that using electronic records can decrease costs by decreasing costs of storing and transferring of medical records. The professor refutes this point by saying that doctors don't throw out or discontinue storing medical records, but they keep those records for back-up, and they are required to do so. Therefor, in her opinion most doctors already pay storage cost.
Second, the reading claims that using electronic medical records can reduce errors which are basically due to illegible handwriting, improper transcription or organization. The professor posits this point by saying that most doctors still use paper and pen to take notes and write prescriptions. Also, she said that the staff is responsible for entering the information into the electronic system, so this still can lead to errors.
Third, the reading states that using electronic medical records may help in medical research by gathering large amounts of data from patients medical records. The professor opposed this point by saying that it's difficult to access and use medical information from electronic database. She states that it is subject to strict privacy laws and it is a complicated procedure by which they need to take permission from the patients. Some patients would even block the use of their own medical statements, and this would make it harder.
As a conclusion, all the advantages of using electrical medical records mentioned in the article was opposed by the professor in the lecture point by point.
