The author and the professor discuss about the agnostids. The author state several theories that how the agnostids may have lived and behaved, which is challenged and refused by the lecturer one by one.
Primarily, an important point expressed by the author is that the agnostids were strong free-swimmers and they could prey on smaller animals. On the contrary, in accordance with the speaker, the reading’s claim doesn’t hold any water. Even though there were some other animals swimming in the open ocean, they had well-developed eyes. However, agnostids had tiny, poorly developed eyes even sometimes were blind. Therefore, if they were active predators, they must have had other sensory organs to help them prey, but there’s no such evidence to show that.
Secondly, the author states that the agnostids may have lived on the seafloor, which is conflicted with the lecturer who says that animals living on the seafloor don’t have the ability to move fast and far. They move slowly and they’d love to stay in someplace rather than spread to new areas. However, the agnostids inhabited different areas across large distances. This shows that they have the ability to travel from one place to another pretty fast. It is unusual for dwellers living on the seafloor.
Finally, the author asserts that agnostids existed the parasites by living on and feeding off larger animals, while the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. He claims that the populations of the parasites are not very large. Because if there were too many parasites, they would kill off the organs they lived on. However, the population of the agnostids was large in fact. As a result, the great size of the agnostid population would rule out this theory.
