The passage says that there are three hypotheses explain the decline of the yellow cedar. However, the speaker refutes that unfortunately the decline is the true, we still don not know what is killing the trees and all the reasons in the passages are adequate.
First, the passage mentions that the cedar bark beetle is the reason why yellow cedar tree decline. However, the speaker says that healthy yellow cedar are much more resisted to insect infect. For example, there are chemicals in their leaves which can poison insect. So, healthy yellow cedar are unlikely to suffer from insect damage. The explanation of the infested yellow cedar is that the trees are already damaged or sick and may soon die any way. So insect parasites is not the fundamental cause responsible for the decline of the yellow cedar, which is opposite to what the passage mentions.
Secondly, the passage posits that bears cause the decline of the yellow cedar. However, the professor argues that although some brown bears damage the yellow cedar, they are not the cause of the overall population decline of the yellow cedar. The populations of yellow cedar all over the northwestern North American is declining, containing the main land of American and off-coast island. There is no bear on the island. Since no matter there is with bear and without bear, the populations of the yellow cedar decline, bear is not responsible for the decline, which contradicts the reading passage.
Thirdly, the passage argues about freezing damage . Conversely, the professor rejects that the reading passage missing a fact that many populations of yellow cedar decline in many low elevasion area where is warm rather than in high elevation area where is cold. If freezing damage is responsible for the death of the yellow cedar, there should be more trees die in high elevation instead of the warm place in low elevation. So, although cold winter may make the growing roots sensitive, it is unlikely to kill them.
