The reading and the lecture are both about the pros and cons of getting eco-certification, which is an endorsement for a product that environmentally friendly. The author points out several reasons why an American company would not be eager to adopt this certification. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made by the author. She thinks that American company would be interested in retrieve those certification base on advantages that its will bring.
To begin with, the author of the reading states that consumer will not pay much attention to the ecofriendly product due to an overwhelming advertisement around them. The lecturer cast doubt on this point. He thinks that even though the neglection is true, the consumer does pay attention by an advertisement that was endorsed by an independent agency. Furthermore, he believes that consumer considers that eco-certification issued by this party is trustworthy.
Secondly, the author argues that price is the factor prevent consumer to vouch for the ecofriendly product. He is the opinion that people are favor for things that inexpensive instead of eco-friendly with higher price tag. The professor is not in line with the author opinion. He points out that the marginally different of price will not be the main factor to sway consumer to buy cheaper, eco-friendly good. He puts forth the idea that consumer will choose the ecofriendly product if the price is less than five percent.
Finally, the reading comments about the advantage of getting eco-certification are ambiguous. He thinks that will not place the company in the front row. The professor, on the other hand, thinks the author opinion is inappropriate. Base on the aforementioned reasons, he thinks the market for eco-products is wide open, and if the company miss the opportunity to get that customer, they will be fall behind.
