The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about different successful ways to combat the cane toad population introduced to Australia to protect the farmers'crop by eating harmful insects. However, the lecture casts doubt on how effective really are these options proposed by the reading passage. According to the lecture, far from being successful, these methods, not only would fail in their goal, but also, they would be very harmful.
First of all, the reading passage proposes to build a national fence arguing that a before fence implemented to stop the rabbit population had good results. On the other hand, the lecture, challenge this idea by explaining that the fence would be successful stopping adults toads, but not small ones or eggs that can be transported by streams. According to the lecture, the streams run through the fences will carry the anphibians to other areas.
Secondly, the lecture opposes to the idea, elaborated by the reading passage, of using volunteers. For instance, the volunteers would be untrained and probably would kill many other especies of toad that are necessary for the environment.
Finally, the use of a virus specifically harmful to the cane toad suggested by the reading passage, is contradicted by the lecture. She states how damage it could be if the virus reach South America where the cane toad is native. Moreover, she explains how the complete ecosystem would suffer as the toad is an essencial part of the food chain that would be broken.
