Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity.
Both the reading and the lecture discuss about the adventure of Robert E. Peary to the North Pole. The article states that he reached the pole on April 7, 1909 and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the reasons are not compelling and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading posits that the investigation of National Geographic Society approved his declare for reaching to North Pole. The professor refutes this point by saying that the investigation was not objective as the members were his friends. And it only took two days.
Second, the article claims that he went to North Pole in only 37 days. And Tom Avery showed that the travel was possible during that period. On the contrary, the professor contends that Tom Avery did not carry his food during his trip and the food was dropped by airplane. He also did his trip during a favor weather condition which was not like the trip of Peary.
Third, the reading averts that there are pictures that are supporting his claim to have reached the North Pole, as the sun's position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the expected position. On the other hand, the lecture opposes this point by saying that there were no shadows to determine the position of sun. Also, the pictures were not clear, thus we are not sure about the credibility of his claim.
