In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
In this set of material, the reading passage claims that benefits of reducing workdays is threefold: a) it decreases companies costs, then, companies profit will increase b) it reduces unemployment rate through offering more job opportunities, and c) employees can spend more time with their family and pursue their private interests. However, the lecturer finds all ideas dubious and presents some evidences to refute them all.
First of all, the author of the passage states that companies can hire more staff to do works, so, employees are less under pressure of overworking and they are less likely to make mistakes which harm company’s profit. Therefore, without assigning any extra money to staffs’ payments, company’s financial and operational performance can improve. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the reasons to reject this idea. He states hiring new staffs may force companies to spend more money on new staffs’ training and medical insurances which are equal to both four-day employees and five-day employees. Therefore, expenditure of companies will increase. Furthermore, the lecturer states that new staffs need office space and budget to new computers. Then, allocate more money on equipment will costly to companies.
Second of all, it is mentioned in the article that employing more staff in companies will decrease unemployment rate and offers more job opportunities. On the contrary, the lecturer draws attention to the fact that companies may raise their expectations and ask employees to work at the same amount of time as they have worked in four days. So, although employees are committed to work for four days, companies may oblige them to work beyond contraction.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that employees would benefit from four-day working because they can spend more time with their family or purse their personal interests instead of working for higher income. In contrast, the speaker disapproves the idea due to the fact that more free time could be risky to the employees. Because they may come across with situations which lose their chance to get promotion due to top managers’ perspective about employees’ ability to work consistently in order to supervise other staffs and tasks for the entire workweek. Furthermore, four-day employees may decrease their job stability and quality of life in economic recession as first persons who quit the company in such period of time.
