You have attended a panel discussion on the qualities that make a good leader. You have made the notes below.
Personal qualities important in a successful leader
• Communicates effectively
• Is persuasive
• Inspires others
Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
“People recognize leadership when they see it”
“Leaders arise from particular circumstances”
“The key to successful leadership is influence not authority”
Write an essay for your tutor discussion two of the qualities in your notes. You should explain which quality you think is more important in a successful leader, giving reasons to support your opinion. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible.
A boss – hardly could we find any position in any company that would be more hotly debated. Everyone knows what the boss should and should not do, how to make things better and which of his or her mistakes were absolutely unforgivable. It seems that this job is pretty easy as anyone could do it, so why good leaders are so hard to find? In this essay, I would like to have a closer look at what sets the greatest leaders apart.
First and foremost, I believe that there is something innate, something you either are or are not endowed. This “something” is like a special power which enables you not only to get enthusiastic about a subject, but also to share this energy with others. Such a person does not need to use his or her positional authority or any kind of pressure to make people want to join them happily. Persuasiveness or ability to motivate others is how this magical spell is officially called.
In addition, the greatest leaders are usually given by one more charm: the gift of eloquence. In other words, almost all of them show perfect communication prowess. It goes without saying, that even the most brilliant idea has no chance if not conveyed clearly and comprehensively to those who are supposed to follow it. Good organisational skills, sense of purpose, decisiveness, self-discipline and willingness to keep themselves up to date with new trends are also attributes of perfect managers. As icing on the cake, I cannot resist to mention empathy and sense of humor.
To sum up, I believe in born-leaders who know the way, go the way and show you the right door, but then let you open the door yourself and walk on your own.
