Recently, there has been a debate about the causes of steller's sea cow extinction, the author in the reading passage suggest three theories had been the cause of this extinction, but the professor refutes all of them, he tries to convince their students of the misleading of these theories.
First of all, the issue about over hunting, the professor contends that the sea cows were a massive animals, they were about nine meters in length and hundred tons in weight,so one of them may feed a small village, the Siberian population is too small at that time, so one sea cow may be enough for a lot of them. By knowing this fact, it is less likely for the hunting to be the cause of sea cow extinction, as the author assumes.
Second, the theory of decrease the food supply for the sea cow because of ecological disturbance, which lead to decrease in kelp(sea plant that the sea cow relied on it), the professor claims that if severe ecological disruption had happened, that must lead to decline in other animals population, like whale population, which didn't happen to any animals. So the shortage in food theory which has been adopted by the author in the reading passage, practically doesn't true.
Finally, the professor refutes the theory that the arriving of fur trader was the cause of sea cow extinction, he says, the sea cow population was already declined a hundred years before the fur trader arriving ,if we know the cause of it's decline at that time, then it must be the real cause of their extinction. By this, the professor knocks down the third theory in the reading passage.
In sum, the professor explains why he does not believe in these theories about the sea cow extinction, then he gives explanations for each point raised by the author in the reading passage.
