Overall, water used for agriculture accounts for the largest proportions in all 4 out of 6 areas. In addition, the percentages of water used for domestic purposes stay at relatively low levels at all 6 regions.
88% of water used in Central Asia, which accounts for the largest part, is for agriculture while the figures for Africa, South East Asia and South America are also 84%, 81% and 71% respectively. Meanwhile, the proportions of water used in agricultural sector in North America and Europe are significantly lower, at 39 % and 32 % respectively. In terms of water usage in industrial sector, Europe is the region consuming the largest percentage of water, following by North America with 48%. The 4 remaining regions consume low percentages of water, with 12% in South East Asia, 10% in South America, 7% in Africa and 5% in Central Asia.
Water usage for domestic purpose stays at low proportions in all 6 regions, below 20%. The amount of water is domestically used in South America accounts for 19% compared to 15% in Europe and 13% in North America. Only 9% of water used for domestic purpose in Africa, which is slightly higher than that for South East Asia and Central Asia, at 7% for the two regions.
