In the lecture, the professor discusses why the three reasons mentioned in the passage on the diminishing bird populations in the USA are not plausible.
To begin with, the reading claims that the expanding cities will destroy more birds' habitats, leading to the decline of bird populations. However, the speaker refutes this and argues that although urban areas are not habitable for some species, it also creates larger and better niche for other types of bird, like sparrows. Hence, it is not reasonable to think that cities cause the drop of birds as a whole.
Next, contrary to the second theory in the reading passage that larger scales of agricultural activities will threaten bird populations by deprive them of their living environment, the lecturer points out that the area of agricultural land in the USA is in fact decreasing annually, as new crops with higher yields are being grown.
Finally, the instructor rules out the possibility of poisonous pesticides. With the awareness of the adverse effects of pesticides among the public, the speaker says, novel, less harmful chemicals are being deployed now. In addition, more plants grown are resistance to pests, so the overall demand for pesticides will be smaller, too. This opposes the idea in the reading material that pesticides are going to continually contribute to the decrease of bird populations.
