TPO 28- integrated writing - Peary's trip to the North Pole
The article provides three supporting arguments for Robert Peary's claim that he has reached the North Pole in 1909. The professor however states that there is no solid evidence for this claim, and the article's arguments are not convincing.
First, the passage claims that the National Geographic Society committe decared that Peray had reached the North Pole. The professor opposes this point by saying that it is true, but the committe was biased and not objective, so its conclusion cannot be trusted. She explains that Peary's close friends were in the committe, who have contributed money to it. Also, the investigations took only 2 days, and was not carefully conducted, according to Peary himself.
Second, the reading posits that a Tom Avery has recently traveled from coast of Greenland in 37 days, supporting Peary's claim about traveling that fast in same route. The professor contends with this point by saying that Avery's traveling conditions was different to that of Peary. She explains that although the dogsled was similar, Avery took advantage of a favorable weather conditions and being light in weight, since he didn't packed food with himself.
Third, the author states that by measuring the shadows and sun position in Peary's photographs, it can be established that they were taken in the North Pole. The professor refutes this point by saying that no such accurate measurement can be done based on the photographs, because they are taken with a primitive camera 100 years ago, and therefore are fuzzy, faded and with blurred shadows.
