Overall, as can be seen from the given chart, the income disparity in Japan was by far highest in comparison with the relatively small figures in Australia and the UK over 3 decades. Besides, there was a decrease trend in all nations, although in the last decade examined, the number of Australia saw a sudden rise.
In 1978, the percentage of difference between genders' salary in Japan was nearly 48 per cent, followed by a downward tendency until reaching just above 40 per cent after 30 years period. Similarly, the figures for the US and the UK also decreased steadily, from around 34 per cent and 29 per cent, respectively to approximately 27 per cent in 2008. This tendency was also the case with France, from half of that of Japan in the initial stage to only 18 per cent in the final years examined.
Australia had the smallest proportion of salary disparity between males and females at about 18 per cent in 1978. It then also experienced a slight fall in the first decade prior to remaining relatively stable in the following 10 years. However, it afterwards went up in 1998, overtaking that of France. By 2008, income gap in Australia had reached around 25 per cent.
