The topic is about what the Chaco Canyon great houses were used for. The reading passage gives three competing theories which are contradictory to the opinions in the lecture.
First, according to the reading passage, these great houses were used as residential as they resembled the early versions of the architecture seen in old recent Southwest societies. However, the lecture holds an opposite opinion. These houses looked really similar to the apartment buildings from outside but not from inside. If the houses could allow hundreds of people living there, there must have been enough fire places for the daily cook. The evidence showed that there were few fire places in the houses even in a large one. So the primary function of the great houses is not residential.
Second, in the reading passage the great houses were backed up as the place where people store their food supply. These houses are big enough for grain maize storage. The lecture argued that this opinion was lack of evidence. The excavation of the houses shows there were no trace of maize found or big containers left.
Third, the reading passage proposed that houses were used as ceremonial centers as an enormous mound was found near one of the house. The mound was formed by a lot of old materials containing large number of broken pots. The professor in the lecture considered this theory not well-supported. There were other materials found in the mound besides the pots, like building materials and construction materials. These materials indicated that the mound was probably used as a trash hip where people throw away the leftover materials.
