The article states that the zebra mussel which is native to Eastern Europe has been spreading out from its habitats to the North America and now it becomes a serious threat to the population of fish in America and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that contrary of what is mentioned in the reading it is possible to control the population of these creatures and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the history shows that the invasion of the zebra mussel is unstoppable. The professor opposes this point by saying that it is not reasonable to say that we cannot control the population of these creatures because we could not do it in past. He states that in past people did not have enough knowledge to control the population of zebra mussels and stop their spread. The professor mentioned that in past ships that crossed the ocean brought a lot of zebra mussels with the water that was full of them but now they know that salty water of the ocean kills these shellfishes.
Second, the author declares that zebra mussels can dominate in new habitats with a variety of conditions easily. Nevertheless, the professor contends that these shellfishes have some predators that can slow their reproduction rate. According to the professor, birds can eat them and stop them from becoming dominant. To stop their population increase, people need to introduce some of their predators at the beginning of their appearances.
Third, the article avers that zebra mussels are likely to cause a decline in the fish’s population by eating planktons and compete with fishes for food. The professor refutes this point by stating that even though these creatures would have negative impacts on the population of fishes that eat plankton, but they also have some positive impacts for some fishes that live on the bottom of the water. Based on the lecture the zebra mussel produces some nutrients that feed the bottom flow fishes.
