There has been some debates among the burning mirror about whether the Greek build just device or not. The lecture believe that the Greek build the burning mirror. However, the reading disagrees and think that there was no need for the Greek to build that device.
The first point of the disagreement is about the ancient Greek were not technologically advanced enough to build that device. The lecture point out the Greek used a small pieces of copper and assemble them together to form the burning mirror device. Moreover, the Greek knew how to directed the small collected pieces of mirror into a parabolic shape. Whereas the author opposes this point by explaining that the technology for manufacturing a large sheet of copper did not exist in the ancient world.
The second area of dispute is that the it took long time from the burning mirror device to set a fire on a ship. The lecturer says that there was a materials called pitch used to seal the space in the boat, this material is flammable and start to fire in a second. When the pitch fire the wood of the ship begin to fire also. On the other hand, the author refutes this by saying that such device is impractical and ineffective, as it took ten minutes to set the object on a fire, and through that time ship has to stay perfectly.
The final issue of the argument is that the burning fire did not seem to be an improvement on a weapon for the Greek. The lecture claims that the Roman were already familiar with flaming arrow, which is a device working in the same way like the burning mirror. However, the burning mirror look different and new to the Roman. Using the burning mirror would be surprising and effective to the Roman. However, the author refutes that by stating that Greek had no reasons to build a weapon like a burning weapon.
