integrated sea otters
There has been some debates among whether the sea otter decline is due to pollution or due to predation. The lecture says that the decline of the sea otters is are due to predation. However, the reading argues that most likely the decline may be due to pollution.
The first point of dispute is that many of the sea otters were found dead on the beach. The lecture says that the main cause that leads to the death of the sea otters is not the pollution. The reason is that there are many predators like the orkers which kill the sea otters and eat them. However, the reading contradicts this point saying that due to the oil rigs and the industrial chemicals, sea otters can not tolerate the pollution and die.
Another controversial issue is that many other mammals beside the sea otters die. The lecture claims that whales were declined because of the human hunting, and also the sea mounts were eaten by the orcas. All of these examples support the idea of predation. But, the reading disagrees stating that due to the pollution which affects the whole ecosystem, the sea otters population declines.
That final point of dispute is that sea otters population declined at some places more than other places. The lecture says that the decline of the sea otters depends on the orchas' access to the area. If the orches are able to access the place and eat the sea otters, then the sea otters' population declines. If they were not be able to access the place like in the rocks and the shallow areas ,the sea otters population would stay still high.
