Both reading and lecture talk about ways to save Torreya taxifoha tree from extinction. The reading passage provides three solutions. Yet, the professor says that these solutions are not satisfactory enough to overcome the problem.
First, the lecture suggests reestablishing the tree in the same location it used to live in for thousands of years. As Torreya tree used to live in a cool and damp microclimate, the researchers will replant it in the coolest and dampest place in Florida, where it used to live. However, the professor sees that this is not a good idea. She says that the weather in the microclimate area where Torreya used to grow is drier now and got affected by the dryness of the general location. The tree will not survive the dry weather.
Second, the reading passage talks about moving Torreya tree to an entirely different location. the seeds of the tree will be planted in a further north area where the climate is cooler. The people in the new location will help Torreya to survive, in a process called assisted migration. Yet, the professor totally opposes this idea. She gives an example of another plant (black locus tree) which has planted in a different area. But the results were devastating. The black locust tree has grown so fast, that caused the area's original plants to die, and to be in danger of extinction.
Third, the reading passage says the third solution is to preserve Torreya in the research centers, where it can be monitored, and protected. The professor refuses this solution. She says this will put the tree in a big danger. To the plant to be capable of resisting the diseases, It should have a big population and a genetic diversity. Research centers are not able to carry this big population of one species. This will limit the number and the chances of the tree surviving.
