The author of the reading passage and the professor both discuss that whether the silver coin unearthed in the state of Maine in the United States is the actual coin that Norse brought to the United States. The author is against this idea and raises three viewpoints. However, the professor thinks that the author's theories contain some defects.
First of all, the author claims that the distance between the Native American site and Norse settlements are far from each other. It is impossible that there is a connection between Native American and Norse. In a contrary, the professor disagrees. He thinks that there are many objects found in Native American site are from other places which are far from their site. The Naive Americans may travel a long distance to North America and bring the coin back.
In addition, the author states that there is no coin be found at the Norse settlements in Canada. However, the professor questions the idea by indicates that the Norse may not have the long-term settlements, sometimes they are back to Europe, and bring all the silver coin with them back to Europe.
Finally, the author raises the point that when Norse traveled to North America, they knew the coin is useless to them, though the coin is adaptable widely in Europe. As a result, the professor contends that even though the fact, that the native North Americans didn't use the coin as money, is true, the Norse knows the coin is very appealing. It may attractive to the north Native Americans, whose use coin for jewelry, and may trade coin for Norse.
