I believe that knowledge is more important than imagination in any profession or academic field, because knowledge includes information, facts, descriptions or skills acquired through experience or education, and prior knowledge permits acquire problem-solving capabilities and consequently, more knowledge. On the other hand, imagination is necessary to design experiments and produce new ideas which can make discoveries.
For example, medical doctors need knowledge to recognize the symptoms and signs that are characteristics of diseases; more importantly, surgeons should study body´s anatomy, because they have to separate a variety of tissues and organs during surgery. Although, medical researchers must have imagination to elaborate investigation protocols. Several vaccines were produced because scientists had ideas to develop it. Vaccines have saved millions of lives around the world.
Furthermore, lawyers need to know the nation´s constitution which regulates the relationship between institutions of the state (executive, legislature and judiciary), define the relationship between individuals and the state and establish the rights of individual citizens. Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of constitution and knowledge to solve specific problems, that´s why lawyers cannot use their imagination to provide legal advice to clients.
Conversely, imagination is the ability of forming mental images, sensations and concepts; it helps provide meaning to experience and understanding to knowledge, also plays a key role in the learning process. Imagination is an important characteristic of researchers, because it permits to elaborate theories to understand the causes and nature of a variety of process. Current knowledge was based on past theories, like the Big Bang theory which explained the early development of the Universe. At present, it is widely accepted within the scientific community because it is the most accurate explanation.
In conclusion, there is sufficient supporting evidence based on observations, expert opinions and personal experience to safely state that in most professions and academic fields, knowledge is more important than imagination. However, imagination is an important piece in the learning process.
