The article discusses a fascinating topic pertaining in this set of materials to the claim that dinosaurs are endotherms, and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer casts doubts on what is presented in the text and oppose each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading passage discusses that dinosaur fossils were found in polar regions indicating their ability to withstand the cold by maintaining a body temperature above the surrounding. In contrast, the professor provides information that gives a contradicting fact. She states that the reason that dinosaur were found in the polar region is because back at that time polar areas were much warmer than today and dinosaurs could have lived there and then travel to a warmer place when winter comes or even hibernate like most reptiles. Clearly a disparity exists between the article and the evidence exhibited by the professor.
Second, the article pushes forth the idea that if an animal's leg is positioned underneath it's body that indicate it's ability to run and such a physical activity is a characteristic of enotherms. However, the classroom discussion contends that by pointing to the fact that such a structure supports more weight allowing dinosaurs to grow tremendously big, and that large size is advantageous to dinosaurs.
Finally, the reading posits that the presence of a structure called Haversian canals which allow a rapid growth is a trait possess by endotherms. The professor refutes this point by explaining that beside the Haversian canals there was another structure found in the fossils called "Growth rings". This is a thickening of the bones indicating a period of time when bones were not growing at all.We also learn that the pattern of periodic growth is a characteristic feature of non-endotherm animals. Consequently, we can argue that indeed the claim made in the reading is unsubstantiated.
