TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including ki

The reading and the lecture are about Chevalier Seingalt, who wrote about famous people of the eighteen century. The author of the article says that his writings do not seem to be credible. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims from the passage. He says that the arguments of the passage can be easily contradicted by historical proves.

First, by borrowing money does not necessary mean that Chevalier was poor. This is because he had assets that needed to be exchange to cash, process that lasts a few days. Therefore, it is not an unusual habit to borrow some cash for a short period of time. Not to mention that he used to have a luxurious live, full with parties and gambling habits. This is a strong counterpoint to the author's assumptions.

Second, there are some ways to keep accurate the conversations between him and Voltaire. The author contends that this idea can not be realistic, since he wrote his memories years after he had small talks with Voltaire. However, the speaker underlines that Chevalier transposed his dialogues with Voltaire, every night after. This fact is also confirmed by his entourage, pointing that he was indeed consulting the notes when he wrote his memories. This is another standpoint that contradicts the passage.

Third, the theory stating he bribed watchmen to help him breakout the prison is inaccurate, because the jail was full with rich individuals. If this method had been successful, there is no doubt that many would have tried to do the same. But, this thing did not happened. Moreover, the ceiling of the cell he occupied, was repaired after a short while he escaped. This fact is also in contradiction with the passage, because it shows a concrete prove of his escape. In conclusion, the author and the lecturer appear to be in disagreement regarding this topic.
