TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The reading and the lecture are both about how the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the Southerwest, were used. The author of the reading explains three possible theories. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article.

First, the author claims that the Chaco structures were purely residential, housing hundreds of people. He believes that these buildings were a first version of the more recent southwest buildings. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that although the outside of the great houses inspires housing a lot of people, the inside of these building proves their puropose was not residential. Furthermore, she points that there is a few number of fire places, which are used by residents whose number is about ten families not hundreds of them as stated in the passage.

Secondly, the author explains as a second theory that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies. he suggests that the size of great houses are suitable to store the long lasting supplies of maize. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She explains that the excavation didn’t bring such conclusions. She explains this by the absence of maize traces or maize containers left there.

Finally, the author mentions that te third theory proposes that the great houses were used as ceremonial centers. He is of the opinion that the large number of broken pots found at Pueblo Alto is an evidence of special ceremonies celebrated there. The lecturer, on the other hand states that the broken pots are not the only material found during the excavations of the mound. She puts forth the idea that there is a large number of other old material like construction tools and that these pots could be regular trush left by workers in this area.
