Agnostids were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago. Agnostid fossils can be found in rocks in many areas around the world. From the fossil remains, we know that agnostids were primitive arthropods-relatives of modern-day insects. However, the fossil information does not allow paleontologists to determine with certainty what agnostids ate or how they behaved. There are several different theories about how agnostids may have lived.
Both the lecture and the reading discuss the possible ways that agnostid lived in the ancient times. The professor contradicts the reading by providing three refutations.
In the first place, the professor states that it is true that agnostids have been found they were swimmers. However, it does not mean that they were swimming predators. To be more specific, the swimming predators known today usually have large eyes with strong vision, so that they could chase after their prey. However, the agnostids we know had poor vision and even could be blind. Furthermore, we do not find any other sense organs of agnostids from the fossils. As a result, the first theory is not convincing.
Secondly, the professor contradicts the argument of the passage by contending that agnostids were fond across over a large region, which is not common in seafloor dwellers. To illustrate, seafloor dwellers usually stayed in and occupied a localized and small area because they moved slowly. Nevertheless, the agnostids were found in a large area, meaning that they could move very fast. Obviously, it is unlikely that agnostids were seafloor dwellers.
Thirdly, the speaker disagree with the last theory by arguing that the size of population implies that the agnostids were not parasites. She further explains that the size of parasites is not large because individuals in the group have limited sources for living. However, the population of the agnostids was very large according to the fossils we found. Again, the professor refutes the theory provided by the reading.
