The reading and the lecture are both about the possobility of sending humand in a trip to Mars, which is a challenging mission. The author of the reading believes that this project is almost impossible to realise because the trip to Mars requires solving many problems. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that even if scientifics found solutions to these problems stated by the writer.
First of all, the author claims that the trip to Mars will take at least two years time which is a long period comparing to the trip to the Moon. Astronautes will need big amounts of food, oxygen and water that can not be provided for such a period of time. The author believes that the ship's capacity is too limited to put on a big quatities of supplies. This point is challenged by the lecturer who says that astronauts can you a new technic callet Hydrauponic which consists on growin plants and crops with their roots in water instead of the soil. This Technic doesn't require a large place. Furthermore, she points out that using the hydropanic provides a recycling system of used water into drinking water. Also, the plants absorbing the CO2 gives fresh air to breath in return.
Secondly, the author states that during this trip, the austronauts will be in the zero gravity environment which causes a severe health problems after spending a long time in space. He provides the exemples of the decrease of muscle mass and bone density. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She thinks that after the trip to the Moon, a lot other trips were be made for several months around the Earth. This helped the astronauts to develop several technics to safely manage the effects of the zero-gravity environment such as the regular excercice to increase the muscle mass, and the use of vitamis and minerals like calcium to provide to decrease of bone density.
Third, the author mentions that a ship travelling in interplanetary space will be exposed to an important danger due to the space radiation coming from the Sun. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that the levels of space radiation is not dangerous all the time. An important dangerous levels occurs occasionally. She puts forth the idea that the austronauts can have special instruments that detects the important radiations. In this case, astronauts can hide in small shielded areas until the danger has passed, and then continue their mission in unshielded areas.
