Some people believe that is better to live and work in a vertical city with multiple tall buildings, as compared to an horizontal city with fewer tall buildings. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
It is irrefutable that nowadays there is a tendency of shifting to big cities with the purpose of settling down and start a new job. These cities, which are the most hunted for this purposes, are mainly comprised of multistorey buildings and I agree, whereas horizontal cities are left behind, in terms of people's preferences. In this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints about the matter before putting forth my opinion.
On the one hand, there are countless benefits of being employed and living in a vertical city. Firstly, you have the opportunity to work in a corporation which is more likely to be located in a skyscraper rather than in a small building, as compared to a horizontal city. Take the example of Sony Company' headquarter in Singapore, which is a metropolitan city and where virtually all large companies are located within tall establishments. Furthermore, there is a higher likelihood for one to find accommodation in a multistorey building, which is most definitely state-of-the-art and has incorporated the latest technology, providing one with a better standard of living.
On the other hand, a sizeable number of such tall establishments gathered in a city means a higher density population which leads to overcrowding, in comparison with just a few spreaded within a horizontal city. In other words, the city would deal with a burgeoning population and its detrimental effects on citizens' physical and mental health. For instance, residents will have to deal with traffic congestion and increased pollution, which will most definitely have some dire consequences for their wellbeing.
To conclude, although there are merits and demerits of living in a vertical city, I strongly opine that the drawbacks are far fewer than the benefits you can get, namely having a better quality of life and a well-paid job in a multinational corporation.
