The lecture and the passage are both about the causes for a species of yellow cedar tree found in the northwestern north America declining. The reading states that there are three main causes of its decline which are accounted by the beetle ,bear and climate change. However the lecturer contradicts this statement. He claims that there are not adequately explained.
Firstly the passage posits that cedar bark beetle which feeds on wood is responsible for the decline of this tree. This is being rejected by the lecturer stating that the healthy yellow cedar tree produces a powerful chemical which is poisonous to the beetle which then dies. As such beetles cannot claimed for the reduction of cedar wood tree.
Secondly the aggressive feeding of brown bears on the wood as a source of food is said to be the cause of destruction of this tree species. However the lecture casts doubt on this by stating that bears do no live in the inland and therefore it cannot feed on these tree species. Thus bears are not responsible for the overall decline of the yellow cedar wood tree.
Thirdly the reading claims that the gradual day to day change in the temperature is responsible for the root growth which causes the damage due to partial freezing leading to its slow decline. According to the professor its in the lower elevated regions where is it comparatively warmer are more susceptible to dying than high elevations. Thus he refutes that statement.
