According to the passage, tree genetic modification which is defined as a process to alter trees’ genes and features has several advantages for both the environment and the grower. On the one hand, the lecturer points out that genetically modified trees are beneficial in some ways. On the other hand, she believes that there are serious problems and costs associated with this kind of trees.
First, genetically modified trees seem to be harder and durable in comparison with natural trees. However, the lecturer explains that most genetically modified trees are resistant to only one particular condition, which does not assure their survival in all possible disruptive conditions. Furthermore, as these trees are much more uniform than natural trees, it is obvious that they are more likely to die in the condition for which they are not designed such as several climatic changes.
Second, the author of the passage points out to genetically modified trees’ higher yields and faster growth rate to support their benefits. On the other hand, according to the lecture, there are hidden costs associated with genetically modified trees. First, the price of the grain is more than that of natural trees. Second, according to the law, each time farmers intend to plant genetically modified trees, they have to pay money to the producing company.
Third, according to the passage, genetically modified trees can be used to overcome the problem of overexploitation of wild trees, caused by cutting trees for human consumptions such as firewood, since they can be replaced faster. However, the lecturer argues that genetically modified trees impose more damage to wild trees since they grow more aggressively. These trees, which are often planted among natural trees, outcompete native trees for essential resources such as water and cause them to ruin.
