The End of History and the Last Man
After dissolution of Soviet Union and receding the ideology of communism for the liberal democracy and capitalism .Francis Fukuyama a well known author in the start of 90s had written the book'' The end of history ''.Describing the event at that time as an ending of ideology competition in the world. Simultaneously the triumph of the idea of capitalism was a watershed in the history of our modern age .Collapse of Soviet Union's system was an inspiration for Fukuyama to formulate his thesis regarding the idea of end of history. He believed that the democracy which had been pursued by western countries triumphed over Marxism ideology. Soviet Union's event ended the long standing conflict between west and east .Thus the eastern countries which under the leadership of Soviet Union influenced by the Marxism principles, came to believe that the values and the systems of liberal democracy is more suitable for society than the other existing system.
Fukuyama in his book based his thesis on the idea of Friedrich Hegel theory .As he said that the history ends when the ideological conflict is eliminated and replaced by one integrated ideology . According to dialectic of Hegel the contradictions of views results in new point of view which be embraced by both parts. When Soviet Union and the other eastern countries fell down and tended towards to the west, demonstrated the victory of the liberal ideas and western system. So he interpreted the change as a turning point that the liberal norms were on the global scope accepted. The established norms of west were the main factors for creating peaceful society. As it was proved and materialized by liberal ideas. European countries in the last four decades had not come to in any conflict with each other, they could through the principles of liberal democracy develop society socially, economically and politically .Liberal democracy values that vested in western countries as norm and did not let the possibility of war among them.
On the other hand Fukuyama referred in his thesis to the philosophy of Karl Marx .Believing that the material world is the base of the conflict among the people. But in the liberal democracy as was seen in the western countries the people had got economic help through social system. So people did not need to fight for getting material achievements. When people were secured all prerequisites through a system, conflict over achieving material was dissipated. As Kojeve in his analyses argued that the progress of history in liberal democracy countries, led toward the establishment of universal and homogenous states.
Another point which Fukuyama referred to it in his book a victory of western ideology was dignity and sense of recognition. According to him democracy system in western countries had secured dignity and recognition for individuals by giving them all individual rights. Basic rights from freedom of expression to economic allowance were established in their constitutions .In such a way under the liberal democracy, system structure secured legal rights to practice the basic individual rights. Therefore there were no any room for conflict over rights which this underpinned the foundation of dignity and sense of recognition. This system paved the way to Individuals to feel allegiance, cooperation and peaceful co-existence too.
According to perspective of Francis Fukuyama Material achievements, sense of recognition and ideological differences were the main factors of social conflicts and were the major reason of resorting to war in some times . But all three causes had been addressed by the liberal democracy system. Those countries which adopted liberal philosophy gave way to these ideas to be imprinted in the society's structure. Western states created positive relationships among individuals and reflected this in other aspects of life politically and economically.
I concur with Fukuyama in some points of the success of liberal democracy in the west and the backsliding of the communism ideas in the world. Disintegration of communism block proved success of west over east. But I do not agree with him claiming that the history ended by dissolution of Soviet Union .The event did not last for a long time as we saw fighting and conflict started in another direction which included culture, ethnic and religious conflicts. In the start of 2000s when the fundamentalist Islamists attacked the Wall Street centre the heart of the castle of liberal democracy system. This event showed that the thesis of Fukuyama of the end of history was not right .The attack demonstrated to the world that history still continues and clashes with liberal ideas on the way. After the 11.september 2001 wars and conflicts intensified around the globe from Africa to Middle East and to South East Asia. Turkey as a regional power under AKP dominance almost refused the liberal system for Turkey and started to stand against the west ideals and adopted Islamic values. Russia again under Putin did not accede to the West. China still as an economic powerful state distanced from west and still stay as state centralised politics not liberal market which west stood for it. So what is happening now in the domain of the international arena. What was happened in the last twenty years implied that the continuation of history is inevitable.
To sum up more and more confrontations among nations due to religion and cultures lie ahead in the future. The Muslim fundamentalists tended to create Islamic state and caliphate, in such ways declared everlasting war against west ideals. In addition to dissolution of Soviet Union, China continued to pursue its own system distinct from Western values. Therefore the events upon 2000s onwards demonstrated that history will continue and does not end as Fukuyama predicted. The events in Yemen and the armed confrontation in Syria, establishing Islamic states in Iraq and Syria . fundamentalist groups in South East Asia and in Africa tell us that the history of tribalism, civilization and cultural conflicts will continue. History continues to witness conflicts for the next years to come as well.
