The following is a letter from a professor at Xanadu college to the college’s president.
“The development of an extensive computer-based long-distance learning program will enhance the reputation of Xanadu College. This program would allow more students to enroll in our courses, thereby increasing our income from student tution. Traditional courses can easily be adapted for distance learners, as was shown by the adaption of two traditional courses for our distance learning trial project last year. Also, by using computer programs and taped lectures, faculty will have fewer classroom obligations and more time to engage in extensive research, thereby enhancing the reputation of Xanadu.”
The argument presented by the professor of Xanadu College to the college’s president concludes that the development of an extensive computer-based long-distance learning program will increase the reputation of the college and will also involve many students across the globe to enroll in the courses provided by the college. However, the argument is quite fallacious as it is based on questionable assumptions and evidences.
Firstly, the argument states that the development of a computer-based course will enhance the reputation of the College. This is quite illogical as the reputation of the college comes from quality education that the college provides with extensive inclusion of practical and analytical knowledge on the subject. Clearly, through computer-based long-distance courses students cannot learn practically and end up with only theoretical learning which is not quite useful for this generation. And skills such as communication, leadership come from classroom learning when the students start interacting among themselves. So, the development of a computer-based long-distance course does not lead to high reputation of the college.
Secondly, the argument mentions about the adaption of two traditional courses for their distance learning trial project which is conducted last year. This is another flaw because they have only tested on the traditional courses which are quite theoretical and are trying to implement long-distance learning for all the available courses. Each course has it’s own requirements and is different in the way they teach. So, we cannot generalise all the subjects based on two traditional subjects.
Moreover, the argument states that more time provided to the faculty will lead to spending more time in extensive research which results in the reputation of the college. It is true that the reputation increases with good results in research but we have to keep in mind that research doesn’t always guarantee in efficient results. It can take more that 10 years to show a small progress in a topic or maybe more. So, replying on research for the reputation of the college isn’t always an option.
After all the observations, we can conclude that it might be hard for the college to rely on computer-based long-distance learning program. The conclusion is a very loosely drawn one as it ignores very important aspects. So the argument is quite weak and fallacious.
