According to a recent report, cheating among college and university students is on the rise. However, Groveton College has successfully reduced student cheating by adopting an honor code, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced a system in which teachers closely monitored students; under that system, teachers reported an average of thirty cases of cheating per year. In the first year the honor code was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey, a majority of Groveton students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without. Thus, all colleges and universities should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's in order to decrease cheating among students.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the ecommendation.
The author's claim and assumptions appear to be sound and cogent as he provides some numbers to support his claim. However, the author fails to further boost his argument with more cogent premises.
Firstly the author claim's to adopt honor code in place of a system in which teachers closely monitored students is supported by the reduction in number of cheating cases in Groveton College. However, it is quite possible that numbers reported by students might be not correct, it is possible that students of the college does not reported the cases which includes their friends. Also there is no evidence provided to support that all the students abide by the honor code. It is possible that number in reduction of reported incidence is might be beacuse some students does not report the incidence.
Also in the argument it is mentioned that new honor code is implemented to Groveton College only, what if the students of Groveton College are more moral than other colleges, what if students of other colleges are not moral as of Groveton College and thus it new honor code will be a failure in those college.
Also the conclusion is based on the survey, however it is not mentioned how many students are included in the survey. Also it is not mentioned in the argument how implement the new honor code in other colleges. It is possible that other college student strength is far more than Groveton College and it will be difficult to implement the honor code.
In conclusion, though the writer may be right in stating that honor code system has reduced the incidence of cheating in Groveton College,he has failed to mention how the honor code can be successfully adopted in other colleges. In order to strengthen his claim writes should provide more context and evidence that honor code truly reduce cheating incidence in college and that other colleges can replicate the system.
