Claim: Colleges and universities should specify all required courses and eliminate elective courses in order to provide clear guidance for students.

Reason: College students—like people in general—prefer to follow directions rather than make their own decisions.

I broadly agree with the speaker's claim that students should be specify all required courses. However, i wonder the necessity of eliminating elective courses, and reason in my eyes is not plenty.

Admittedly, I think for it's extremely necessary for colleges and universities to require courses for students, especially for those fresh students in order to provide clear guidance for students. I wonder that nearly every fresh students have ever troubled with electing course in computer. Facing a verity of course and little understand of their major, it is difficult to choose whether the course they need to take in order to meet graduation goal. Thus, the hands offered from colleges will help students solve lots of problems. However, the practice does not mean that colleges will help students all the time. As for the senior students who have already familiar with the program of choosing class and grasp the ways to decide which courses they need to elect, they should decide by themselves without requiring from colleges any more.

However, specifying all required courses at my standpoint does not mean eliminating elective courses because besides the course of their major, they also need to learn some knowledge outside their major field of study to broad their vision, which need to depend on their interest. And, regarding more and more students who have interdisciplinary background are welcomed by experienced employs, it is more dispensable for students to choose more other courses of their interest. At the mean time, colleges and universities also need to consider the particular needs of some students who do not like their major and wants to learn other major during their further education. For example, a students want to convert to learn biology instead of Math, so for him, he must need to spend his time on learning the biology courses. If the colleges eliminating the elective course, it may decrease the possibility for the student to learn him ideal things.

Last but not least, some people may opposite my claim regarding the reason that College students—like people in general—prefer to follow directions rather than make their own decisions, however, i think they disregard a very important factor that the people in society now have ever been students in colleges. Maybe indeed because their school always help them decide everything, they become so passive. In this point, i think the school cannot indulge their students any more.

In sum, I argue that it is not rationally for school to do it practice regarding the flaws in this claim and reason.
