Claim: Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system.
Reason: Laws cannot change what is in people's hearts or minds.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

The author claims that laws are ineffective in solving problems because they cannot influence people’s believes. While some people believe that legal system has a strong control over people’s minds and reduce crime rate because punishment is severe if an individual violates the laws, others believe otherwise. In my perspective, we should have a degree of neutrality in assessing the efficiency of laws in solving problems and influencing people’s hearts.

Indeed, many laws are ineffective in changing people’s deeply-rooted believes. Some people have a strong addiction to alcoholic beverage and therefore the Prohibition laws cannot change their appetite. Others may have a strong longing for equality and therefore the racial segregation law cannot change their faith. These laws are ineffective because they violate certain aspects of human rights and are despised by people, having no power of influencing their minds.

Furthermore, unjust laws cannot solve social problems and often aggravate them, or even creates new problems. Looking back to the previous examples, The prohibition laws were intended originally to solve alcohol abuse, yet this problem was never solved by law enforcement. Many people start purchasing illegal alcohols, and such demand results in the rise of criminal organizations such as the one led by Al Capone . They bootleg mass quantities of alcohols people desire and meanwhile commit serious crimes like murder, theft. On the other hand, the criminal organizations bribed and even blackmailed politicians, resulting in corruption.

However, if the laws are just, they have a strong influence in regulating people’s minds and are effective in solving problems. For example, the Good Samaritan’s law protects people who give assistance to those in need, ensuring that people will not hesitate to save others due to possible unintentional injury or wrongful death. By this protection, people become braver in saving others in jeopardy and many disputes between volunteer helpers and victims would not exist. Similarly, consumer protection laws ensure the rights of consumers. By these laws, people will not fear unfair trades and will be more willingly to become consumers and low consumption problems will be solved. The just laws protect people’s deserved rights and are praised by most people. The acceptance of the laws will be the greatest source of solving social problems and regulating people’s minds.

In conclusion, unjust laws are ineffective in either solving problems or adjusting people’s minds. However, just laws protect the deserved rights of the people, and have strong power of solving problems and directing people’s minds.
