Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by 30 percent. Potential employers, looking at this dramatic rise in grades, believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
With the information provided, the assumptions leading to conclusion remains unfounded. Author uses the evidence that potential employers believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University hence to enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors. However, the author makes a number of unproved assumptions that hamper reader's ability to believe author's conclusion. If the author was to provide more evidence to support the assumptions, the argument would be much more effective.
The primary assumption underlying author's conclusion about relationship between higher grades and evaluation of the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. It might be possible that due to implementation of new procedure of evaluation of teching effectiveness professors are now more effort in teaching compare to their earlier efforts and it helped students to better understand the subject and score higher. So, to reinforce the argument author should have discussed about current and previous teaching methods and efforts of professors.
Moreover, author further assumes that termination of student evaluation of professors will result in to gain authenticity of grade obtained by omega university students hence omega student can compete from Alpha university. But it might be possible that omega university students are not study oriented compare to alpha univeristy students hence employers are more prefering alpha university student due to their knowledge. To reinforce the argument author should have discussed about comparison of students from alpha university and Omega University like their intellectual level.
The author further assumes that increase in the grades is only due to change in professors attitude towards grading to get better feedback from students. But it might be possible that now omega university students taking their studies in a more serious way compare to their earlier way. So,to reinforce the argument author should have discussed about previous and current study level of students like duration of study, their attendance in class etc.
To sum up, the author fails to substantiate his conclusion about prospective step of Omega University to terminate student evaluation of professors so that they become successful in getting job like graduates from nearby Alpha University. He should have discussed about current and previous teaching methods and efforts of professors, comparison of students from alpha university and Omega University like their intellectual level and previous and current study level of students like duration of study, their attendance in class etc to substantiate his conclusion.
