Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by 30 percent. Potential employers, looking at this dramatic rise in grades, believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
The argument that teachers’ examination does not bring benefits to Omega University because of exaggerated grades, so students are hard to find a job after they graduate may seem logical at first glance. The author makes a valid argument, one that would be correct if its premises were true. However, his conclusion relies on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence, and it uses terms that lack definition.
First, the notion that student evaluation of professors would be understood clearer if the author provided more information about the evaluation such as whether or not the evaluation focuses on the quality of teaching, the inspiring abilities of professors to their students, and the seriousness of teaching. The assumption is that if the evaluation reflexes correctly the professors’ abilities, the weak point and strong point of whom are expressed, so the university can use this evaluation in order to have good strategy to improve the university’s teachers. Also the university can find other professors who meet university’ requirements, so the improvement of students’ grades is possible.
In addition, the writer provides no evidence that grades at Omega are exceeded. In fact, people would be convinced if he gave them a specific survey or investigation about the exaggeration. Also, the lower rate of students who are successful at getting jobs to compare with that of Alpha University is not result of the evaluation because this rate depends on the ranking of Omega University and the abilities of students. For example, people cannot compare a local school with a national school in the qualities of students and professors.
In conclusion, the writer would not necessarily be wrong to assert that student evaluation of professors has some drawbacks. But to support the current conclusion that this evaluation should be canceled, the writer first defines the problem more clearly and submits more conclusive evidence
