'The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.
“Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.”
The memo from the business manager of the television station states that there are complaints from the audience that the national news is given importance compared to local news. The memo also attributes the loss of advertising revenues to prioritization of national news over the local and weather news. There are certain factors which have to be considered to understand the observed trends.
Viewers choice is an indispensable factor. The viewers are the arbitraters for the success of the television station. The viewers choice should be given a prime importance and should be always be attended to. The complaints received from the viewers could be because they feel local and weather news are of equal importance as national news. Hence in terms of viewers choice, it's a good idea to restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level. On the other hand, a dip in the advertising revenue could be because of many factors. The dip could be ascribed to the program timings. Being a late night program, the advertisers probably would have thought to invest in a program which has more viewer coverage. The decrease in the revenues could also be because of the business not running good. The decrease in the advertising revenues could also be of the lesser number of viewers, which is inturn because of the change in the time devoted to local and weather news. Therefore we need to know, if the dip in the revenues is solely because of the content of the news and nothing else.
Hence, while the viewers choice is important and has to be attended to, the cause for the dip in the revenues has to be further investigated. If the cause for the dip in the revenues is because of the lesser time for local and weather news; since both the evidences are pointing towards the same direction, its in the best interest of the television station to restore the timings of the local and weather news.
