The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station
“Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather id local news During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of weather and local news In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level "
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument

The passage suggests that weather and local news should be devoted more time in late night news program to attract more viewers and to avoid losing advertising revenue from local businesses. The argument to flawed due to various reasons.

Firstly, there is no information available on the reason due to which news program decided to focus more on national news instead of local and weather news. It might be possible that news program might have recieved suggestions from large number of viewers for increasing the national news coverage.

Secondly, it is assumed that because local news was given less priority by news program, local businesses cancelled the contracts to advertise with them. There might be many other reasons for that. It may be possible that there is no effect of advertising on the profits of local businesses, due to which they decided to cancel their advertising contract.

Thirdly, it is assumed that viewership of news program will increase if local and weather news are shown for greater time. A better analysis of argument would have been possible, if number of viewers before and after prioritizing the national news would have been provided. This data could have been used to compare whether more viewers want to watch local and weather news or more number of people want to watch national news.

Hence, as the argument makes several unwarrented assumptions, it fails to make a convincing case that increasing the time devoted to local and weather news in a news program would increase the viewership and advertising revenues fro local businesses.
