It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

An individual’s identity is mainly perceived by referring to what society reflects about that person since discovering one’s identity is essentially based on studying one’s background, and deriving background information would be impossible if individual’s identity is considered as an isolated subject.

In fact, one’s identity is depended to the society, yet the degree of dependency might vary from a person to another person. Even if a person generates a contrasting exceptional identity from society, his/her implications would be understood when person’s traits and behaviors are compared with community’s norms. The identity is acknowledged by assessing the relevance of one’s identity with known patterns. Social groups create the opportunity to demonstrate one’s identity with high accuracy. The correlation between identification of a person in a community and one’s identity is significant.

However, this claim might be weakened because the members, contribution in forming a social group would vary and consequently the norms of a group are dominated by particular members who make the reflection distorted. Therefore, members might assign different identity. Although this could be categorized as a contrasting identity, which would be discovered by comparing a member identity with standard practice of a community.

In sum, we tend to define ourselves by referring to our identification with social groups either by emphasizing similarities or differences between ourselves and social groups.
